The new series ‘The Serpent’, in which Netflix ventures as co-producer and prepares together with the BBC, already has a protagonist. Actor Tahar Rahim will play French serial killer Charles Sobhraj in the new drama based on true events.
Tahar Rahim (‘The Looming Tower’) will play the role of con man and mass murderer Sobhraj, who murdered at least a dozen Western tourists in India, Iran, Thailand, Nepal and Turkey and was discovered and followed by a young diplomat in the mid-1970s.
The eight-episode series is written by Richard Warlow (‘Ripper Street’) and is based on the true story of how the elusive Sobhraj was captured and put on trial. The drama tells the story of a junior diplomat at the Dutch embassy in Bangkok when he unknowingly enters the web of crime that leads him to chase the murderer in the years of the Asian Hippie Trail.
The series will be directed by Tom Shankland (‘The Missing’) and produced by Mammoth Screen (‘Poldark’), owned by ITV.

Who is Tahar Rahim
Rahim is one of the most famous stars in Franceand has recently been shooting the Netflix series ‘The Eddy’ under the direction of ‘La La Land’ director Damien Chazelle. The actor, who has been pulling off major movie and TV show projects since his award-winning performance in Jacques Audiard’s ‘A Prophet,’ previously starred in the Hulu miniseries ‘The Looming Tower’ and the crime drama ‘The Last Panthers.’ . As for movies, his recent appearance was for the opening film of the Berlinale ‘The Kindness of Strangers’.
As confirmed by Variety, the actor has commented that: “I am delighted to play Charles Sobhraj in ‘The Serpent’, a role that I have dreamed of playing since I read a book about him when I was 17 years old.. It couldn’t get any better than doing it under the direction of Tom Shankland and writers Richard Warlow and Toby Finlay.”
Although the character of Sobhraj will mark Tahar Rahim’s darkest role to date, ‘The Serpent’ appears to be perfect material for an actor who has always given intense, multi-faceted performances in auteur films from around the world.

Netflix-BBC Marriage Netflix
