Have you ever heard of Thierry Mugler? Definitely yes, even if you don’t know it. You have seen and heard it in the hype that Madonna’s concert dresses have caused in the world press, from the 1980s to today, many of them – scandalous and extreme! – designed by him. In fact, Mugler is not only a stylist, but also a photographer and a car enthusiast. And all this, mixed together, produces a unique view of the world and an equally unique way of expressing it. Mugler’s fashion is not made of clothes, but of dreams and nightmares, as well as stories!
Scandalous Mugler
Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg on 21 December 1948 and was only 22 years old (and 1970) and already in Paris , where he works as a window dresser. In his spare time, however, his genius is at the service of flying sketches for clothes and accessories, which he keeps for himself. He created his first collection in 1973 , at the age of 25, and the first atelier with his name dates back just two years later. Unable to stay still, the young and rampant Thierry Mugler travels a lot , especially around Europe, and is passionate about car bodies, with a particular predilection for American cars. Another passion of him and that for the world of noir.
He transfers all the experiences he experiences while traveling to his clothes. This is how the crazy bodices that Madonna will wear during her concerts, the extravagant colored furs, the seams that highlight the generous curves and other elements that ignite the scandal in the media and insiders are born. “As long as you talk about it”, says the famous motto, and in fact success comes instantly.
The passion for photography, which came at a later time, completes Mugler’s inspiration, drawing inspiration above all from architecture.
The way of perfumes
In the nineties, Thierry Mugler discovers another passion: that for fragrances. Thus he begins to “experience” the universe of perfume essences , in the true sense of the word. He prepares them himself, mixing and skilfully combining aromas, sometimes impossible. Thus was born the new fragrance “Angel” (year 1992 and one of the best-selling fragrances in the world) and other attempts that will lead, in 1997, Mugler to abandon fashion to devote himself only to the world of perfumes.
Since 2003, the career of this designer has been rooted almost exclusively in the production of fragrances, but also in those same years leather goods, jewelry and sunglasses, always linked to the name of Mugler, began to come out.
In the meantime, the fashion house closes its doors and will only be brought back to life in 2010.
Mugler’s successes
Thierry Mugler’s successes are combined with his extravagances and his little and big scandals. He is the first to launch, for example, an inexperienced actress (Diana Ross) on the catwalk, dresses the singers with Rolls Royce bumpers, creates ceremonial dresses for politicians and activists. In the video of the song Too Funky , by George Michael, one of his fashion shows appears and Mugler decides to direct that part of the film himself, reinventing himself as a film maker too!
As mentioned, she dresses Madonna in her concerts and the clothes made for the film diva Sharon Stone are also famous. In addition, she also lends her artistic hand to the service of Cirque du Soleil for the Zumanity show. She also delights in writing books on fashion and photography, even these, needless to say, with resounding success.
Thierry Mugler leaves us on January 23 at the age of 73, leaving behind his works, which have dressed famous celebrities and faces from the world of entertainment and the most famous top models in the world. His collections, muscular, sexy, innovative, will remain forever in the history of fashion.
