A few years later, in 1989, ‘Ghostbusters II’ was released , the second part of the original 1984 film. And from that moment its director, Ivan Reitman, said goodbye to what became one of the most emblematic sagas of the decade of the 80s.
In 2016, however, ‘Ghostbusters’ arrived, directed by Paul Feig and which had only women in its cast: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. In addition, Neil Casey, Andy Garcia, Cecily Strong and Chris Hemsworth also participated in the cast. But the criticism, although I accept it, I place it below the original, “but slightly above ‘Ghostbusters II’.
Recently, as we have told you in some moments, next year ‘Ghostbusters 2021’ will arrive, which will be directed by the son of Ivan Reitman, known by the name of Jason Reitman . Which, it seems, could become the last installment in the franchise, which would mean that the director would pass by the 2016 version.
In fact, although it may not sound familiar to you, the truth is that he already has hits like ‘Juno’, ‘Tully’, ‘El Candidato’ or ‘Up in the air’ among his filmography.
Synopsis of ‘Ghostbusters 2021’
It seems that Reitman son will resume the story that Reitman father left in 1989 , thus becoming a continuation of the second part. In Reitman Jr.’s words of the 2016 reboot, ‘I have a lot of respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses, and I’d love to see more stories from them. However, with this new film it will follow the trajectory of the original film’.
In fact, its title would make us understand that, although it is a continuation, it could be set in a much more current moment.. And, apparently, it would focus on a single mother and her son. Specifically, in a family that moves to a small city. In it they will discover more about the secrets of that place, and above all, about themselves.
We have also learned that the film will feature the presence of two teenage boys and two teenage girls . And although not much is known about the cast, if we have learned something more about the story that Reitman Jr. and Gil Kenan are creating:
1. Male Protagonist 1
He is a 13-year-old conspiracy theorist. In addition, he is very interested in fantasy, in science fiction.
2. Male Lead 2
He is a 12 year old boy. Dark-haired, blue-eyed, slender, pale, and withdrawn, he is also brilliant, witty, and prodigious. He is very good at solving problems and loves technology.
3. Female lead 1
12 year old girl. She has trouble relating to other people on an emotional level, having difficulty understanding other people’s feelings.
4. Female lead 2
13 year old girl. She loves fun, she is curious and charming, although also a bit of an airhead.
The characters, as we can see, bear an enormous resemblance to the original protagonists, which could make us suspect if they were not the grandchildren of the protagonists of the 1984 and 1989 films. However, at the moment little is known about it.

About the cast, although at the moment there are no big things confirmed, it does seem that Sigourney Weaver has been one of the first to confirm that she would be in this new installment . And Reitman himself indicated that the originals would be at the fan fest, although it is not known if they will be quite present in the new story, or only in the form of cameos.
We have also learned that Finn Wolfhard, one of the actors of ‘Stranger Things’ would be in talks with Sony to be part of the project . The same would happen with Carrie Coon. Remembering the plot that we mentioned in the previous section, it seems possible that these two interpreters would be the ones in charge of giving them life in fiction.
YThe actress McKenna Grace, who we saw recently in ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ (Netflix), has become another member of the cast of the film , being able to play the other daughter of Coon (and, therefore, of Wolfhard’s sister).
It is also known, as you can imagine, that the actresses who participated in the 2016 reboot will not be in the new installment. In fact, Reitman himself ruled it out, although the director of that film, Paul Feig, indicated that he was sorry that his team did not return to the fray. It is something that would be evident, especially after the losses that the tape caused in Sony.
Release date
Despite not having much information, we do know the date chosen by Sony forits premiere in theaters: it was on July 10, 2020 . Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the last confirmed date is March 5, 2021. Therefore, we will have to wait a few months to enjoy a movie that promises to return us to nostalgia.
